Local club has 71 qualify for Junior Olympics Regionals

The Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club competed in the State Championships of the USATF Junior Olympics program over the weekend in Rock Hill.

The local club had had 10 state champions, broke a few state records and had several runner-up and third-place finishers. Raven Grant shattered the association record by winning the state championship in the Girls 15-16 200 meter dash with a time of 24.73 seconds, and she also won the state title in the 100 meters (12.08).

Kyle Watkins also won a pair of state titles, setting a new association record in the 9-10 Boys 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.74. He also won the state title in the 9-10 Boys 800 meters with a time of 2:42.61.

Ahmad Nelson (17-18 men’s 100 meters, 11:00), Anna Walker (Girls 11-12 high jump, 4-10); Julian Dent won the state title in the boys Javelin with a toss of 30.10 meters; Braden Poirier (Boys 13-14 javelin, 34.58 meters); Kayla Watkins (13-14 Girls high jump, 5-0); and Serena Elias (Girls 9-10, 1500 meters, 5:59.58)) were the other state champs.

MBTAFC had a total of 71 qualify for this weekend’s Regional Championships in Winter Park, FL. The top five athletes from each event at Regionals will move on to the July 22-28 National Championships in Greensboro, NC.
