Local clubs combine for five Can-Am Cup championships

bufc-pumas2017canamThe Grand Strand YMCA Can-Am Cup youth soccer tournament featured more than 200 teams from all over the Southeast competing over the weekend, and the drama literally came down to the last kick for a pair of local clubs.

With the rest of The Market Common’s Grand Park Complex empty and the sun setting on the Sunday finale, the Beach United PridePumas claimed the Under-14/15 Girls Red championship in penalty kicks after battling the PISA Hurricanes to a scoreless draw. The PridePumas took a 3-1 advantage in PKs to become one of three BUFC teams to win tournament crowns.

A short time earlier at Ashley Booth Field, Coast FA’s 03 Red was winning the Under-15 Boys Red Division title in a revenge game of its own. The 03 Red avenged a 5-2 loss to the PISA Hurricanes earlier in the day to take a 5-3 win in the final. The Coast 06 went 4-0 to sweep the Under-11 Girls Red Division, and the Coast 07 Red made the Under-10 Girls Red Division final.

As the host club, BUFC kept its share of hardware at home. In addition to the PridePumas, the Flash dominated its way to the Under-14 Girls White, scoring four consecutive shutouts and outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 28-0 to collect the championship trophy. The BUFC Legends claimed the Under-14 Boys Blue Division crown, allowing only one goal for the entire tournament. They took 1-0, 2-0 and 2-0 victories in pool play before defeating PSA United 2-0 in the final.

BUFC also had a pair of finalists. The Storm went undefeated in pool play at 2-0-1 before suffering a tough 1-0 loss to MPRD Cosmos in the final of the Under-13 Boys White. The Tigers won three consecutive one-goal games to reach the Under-10 Girls final but suffered a 3-0 loss to the CASL Fusion to earn second-place honors.
