Local runners make final charges at state XC meet

The North Myrtle Beach High girls cross country team scored an eighth-place finish in Saturday’s SCHSL Cross Country Championships at the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia.

The Lady Chiefs (270) were led by Wilson Jenerette (21:09) in 36th place, Breeauna Spickler (21:26) in 44th place, seventh-grader Isabella Spickler (22:05) in 57th, Havana Charles (22:09) in 61st, and senior Emily Worsham (22:36) in 72nd individually.

The St. James (430) girls earned a 15th-place finish with a youthful lineup. Freshmen Bryanna Warner (22:06) and Taylor Marotta (23:07) finished 58th and 82nd respectively to lead the Lady Sharks. Sophomore Baylee Payne (23:16) placed 89th, senior Reagan Parr (23:30) placed 93rd, and eighth-grader Hayley Spears (24:18) took 108th to round out the top five.

In Class 4A boys, St. James (474 points) placed 17th as a team, led by sophomore Ryan Hughes (17:51) in 49th, junior teammate Caden Martinez (18:36) in the 87th spot, sophomore Melvin Aguillar-Lopez (19:27) in 111th, sophomore Brandon Jordan (19:41) in 117th, and freshman Sam Oppelt (19:44) in 119th place.

Myrtle Beach sophomore Tyler Flannelly (17:26) finished 29th, eighth-grade teammate Jake DeSalvo (18:56) sneaked into the top 100 in 100th place. North Myrtle Beach was led by freshman Rogan Vincent (19:06) in 110th place.

In Class 5A boys, Carolina Forest’s Jacob Dulson (16:53) turned in the best local time of the day for a 33rd overall finish, and teammate Dylan Martinez (17:58) was 107th individually. Socastee was represented by Lucas Davis (17:27) in 71st place.

In Class 5A girls, Conway senior Kenia Smith (20:25) capped her high school career by cracking the top 50 with a 49th-place finish.
