Local surf movie to debut Thursday on the big screen

Adaptive Surf ProjectThe Cherry Grove Pier Surf Club’s latest release, “Single Fins, Single Gears” will debut this Thursday evening at Grand 14 Theatre in Market Commons at 7pm.

The 70 minute film, created by surfers from the Cherry Grove area includes clips from surfers up and down the Grand Strand and is described as a mockumentary. Director Luke Sharp says, “The film is made by a group of hippie surfers about unusual surf boards and bicycles and the unique people who ride them, and mermaids” The mermaids are played by local surfers with disabilities who surf adaptively with the help of other surfers.

The premier is open to the general public and will include a red carpet entrance, ukulele players, and hula dancers.

This is the third film for the group, following their 2014 release of “The darkness of light” and their 2015 release of “The Translucence of Fog aka The Brock Johnson Story.”

“We really tried to include as many local surfers as we could in the film,” said Sharp. “Our past films have done really well, so we expect a large crowd Thursday night.”

Editor James Samaha talks about the process of putting this together, “The ideas usually originate with Luke Sharp, and they are usually way out there. He shoots a scene and then does some rough editing to get it close to his vision. Then, it’s handed over to me to do the fine tuning, adding music, fixing audio levels, and putting in text and transitions. Once we’re happy with it, and have the approval of our wives, we hit the export button and pray the computer doesn’t crash.”

The film features adaptive surfers Veronica Tario, Brock Johnson, Terrel Rawson, and Ernie Johnson who have competed locally, nationally, and internationally in adaptive surf contests. The music in the film is original recordings by local artists, the art was made by local artists, and the cycling shots are from local riders.surf-art

There is a $10 entry fee, with half of the proceeds going to the Adaptive Surf Project, an organization that builds and donates surfboards to local adaptive surfers. They also provide training and competition travel for adaptive competitors.
