Wrestling: Locals earn top rankings; Chiefs take two

The latest rankings were released Tuesday for SCHSL wrestling, but many of the state’s top teams and individuals will get to prove their positions on the mat when local teams meet at Saturday’s Horry/Georgetown County Invitational.

In Class 4A, all three local teams were ranked among the state’s top 20, with North Myrtle Beach leading the way at No. 12. St. James is ranked 15th, and Myrtle Beach is 18th.

The Chiefs have two No. 1-ranked individuals in Brennan Michael (152) and Curtis Wolfe (182), and a pair of No. 2-ranked wrestlers in Rahsaan Vereen (170) and Kwame Livingston (285). Tanner Collins (145) is ranked seventh.

St. James’ Ethan Mason (106) is ranked No. 2 in his weight class. Myrtle Beach also has a pair of No. 2s Pedro Reyes (182) and Jacob Cisco (220), as well as No. 5 Daniel Mitchell (195).

In Class 5A, only Carolina Forest cracked the top 20 at No. 18. Led, by No. 3-ranked PJ Wunderlick (126), the Panthers lead the area with seven ranked wrestlers – No. 5 Isaiah Poppe (106), No. 5 Matt Ashworth (113), No. 5 Corey Conover (145), No. 6 Braeden Bernhardt (120), No. 6 Noah Sritan (138), and No. 7 John Winzenried.

Socastee is represented by No. 7 Nick Ward (106).

Carolina Forest will host the Horry/Georgetown County Invitational on Saturday.

Chiefs win tri-match

* The No. 12-ranked North Myrtle Beach High wrestling team swept a tri-match with Cheraw and region rival Marlboro County on Wednesday.

The Chiefs won both matches easily despite being shorthanded in the lowest three weight classes, claiming a 50-15 victory over Cheraw. Ten Chiefs won their matches by pin or decisions, including the best battle of the day in Jaylan Moses’ 13-11 overtime win over Cyrus Ingram.

North Myrtle Beach benefited from seven forfeits in beating the Bulldogs 60-6. The Chiefs earned pins in three of the four matches.
