Locals brave open waters, win at Lowcountry Splash

Several Grand Strand swimmers took to open waters Saturday to compete in the Lowcountry Splash in Charleston.

The Lowcountry Splash is the premier open-water swim competition in South Carolina. The annual meet takes place in Charleston Harbor with swimmers starting from Hobcaw Yacht Club in Mt. Pleasant (for the 2.4-mile swim) or the Daniel Island Pier (for the 5-mile swim). From these two locations, swimmers make their way down the channel to a finish line just past the USS Yorktown at Patriot’s Point.

This year, there were over 500 swimmers in the water: 337 swimmers in the 2.4 mile race and 165 swimmers in the 5.0 mile race. A variety of Myrtle Beach swimmers competed, including Master’s Level swimmers, local lifeguards, fitness enthusiasts and triathletes, and club swimmers from the Coastal Aquatic Club.

CAC’s Ian Morgan battled SCSC swimmer Davis Caldwell with Ian overtaking Davis in the shadows of the USS Yorktown within 300 yards of the finish to be named the overall champion. Ian finished the race in a time of 37:36, winning by 6 seconds. CAC’s Casey Mitchell was fourth overall with a time of 38:01 (just 2 seconds out of 3rd place).

Former CAC swimmer Maggie Langdale was the top female finisher and 6th place overall with a time of 38:41. CAC assistant coach Fachin posted a time of 43:08, which earned him first place in the Men’s 25-29 age-group category and 55th out of 337 racers (top 16%).

The South Carolina Open Water State Championship will be held at Clemson University and Lake Hartwell on June 9.
