LSU, Bama to meet again; See full bowl schedule

It’s official; it’s a rematch.

LSU and Alabama will play for the national championship as the Southeastern Conference rivals held down the top two spots in the final BCS standings on Sunday.

The Crimson Tide barely held off Oklahoma State for the No. 2 spot and will take on undefeated LSU on Jan. 9 in New Orleans.

It will be a rematch from the regular season, when visiting LSU squeezed out a 9-6 overtime over Alabama on Nov. 6 at Tuscaloosa.

“We look forward to playing Alabama. Very quality opponent, certainly someone we’re familiar with,” LSU coach Les Miles said.

The major drama following Saturday’s conference championship games was whether No. 3 Oklahoma State’s dominating 44-10 win over rival Oklahoma would be enough to vault the Cowboys over Alabama.

Oklahoma State (11-1) did close the gap on the idle Crimson Tide, receiving a BCS total of .933 to Alabama’s .942.

“We were very disappointed,” Oklahoma State Mike Gundy said. “We felt like we had an opportunity by the way we played in the (Oklahoma) game.”

It will mark the first time in the 14-year history of the BCS that there will be a rematch in the championship game and also the first time that two teams from the same conference will play for the title.

Third-ranked Oklahoma State will head to the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2 to take on No. 4 Stanford (11-1) and star quarterback Andrew Luck, expected to be the top pick in next year’s NFL draft.

In other BCS matchups, Pac-12 champion Oregon, which handed Stanford its only loss, will take on Big Ten Conference champ Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on Jan 2 in a matchup of 11-2 teams.

The Sugar Bowl (Jan. 3) features an unlikely pairing with Michigan (10-2) of the Big Ten taking on Virginia Tech (11-2), which was throttled by Clemson 38-10 in the ACC title game.

In the Orange Bowl (Jan. 4), ACC champion Clemson (10-3) will square off with West Virginia (9-3), which finished in a three-way tie for the Big East Conference title but was awarded the BCS bid.
