Martinez leads two-hitter as Pelicans shut out Red Sox

pel-martinezandcatcherHolding Salem to just two hits, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans shut out the Red Sox 3-0 on Tuesday night at LewisGale Field. Jonathan Martinez tossed six scoreless frames, taking a no-hitter into the fifth, and allowed just one hit on the night, while Trey Martin’s ninth-inning home run gave the Pelicans insurance late.

The game remained scoreless through the first seven innings. Teddy Stankiewicz matched zeros with Martinez early, leaving with men at the corners and one out in the sixth of a 0-0 tie. Kyle Kraus came on, inducing an inning-ending ground ball double play off the bat of Kevin Brown to keep the game scoreless.

Stankiewicz scattered six hits, including two doubles, a walk, and a hit batter over 5 1/3 shutout frames.

The Pelicans (68-46, 27-18 second half) finally broke through in the eighth inning against Kraus. With one down Pin-Chieh Chen reached on an infield single. With two outs, he stole second base, encouraging the Red Sox (54-61, 16-29 second half) to intentionally walk Caratini, who was already ahead in the count 2-0.

With two on and two outs, Cael Brockmeyer lined a single to left center field, scoring Chen from second, to put the Pelicans ahead 1-0.

Trey Martin added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer off the left field foul pole in the ninth inning.

Martinez worked six scoreless innings, allowing just a fifth-inning single to Yolian Cerse. He walked two and struck out two and took no decision. David Garner (2-1) fired two perfect innings to pick up the win, while Jasvir Rakkar notched his fourteenth with a scoreless ninth inning.

Salem managed just two hits, the fifth-inning single and a ninth-inning line drive to right field from Forrestt Allday.

The Winston-Salem Dash split their de-facto doubleheader with the Potomac Nationals, so the Pelicans are now just two games back of first place in the Southern Division Second Half standings.

The Pelicans continue their series with the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday at LewisGale Field with a 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans send Jen-Ho Tseng (5-6, 3.41 ERA) to the hill opposite Salem righty Kevin McAvoy (7-9, 4.00 ERA).
