Sinclair scores three TDs, MB defense posts shutout

mbfoot-22whiteMother Nature hindered No. 1-ranked Myrtle Beach’s pass-happy offense and rock-solid kicking game on Friday night. But strong performances by the Seahawks’ running game and their much-maligned defense delivered in the rain for a 38-0 victory over Wilson at Florence Memorial Stadium.

Sinclair rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns and caught another to lead the Seahawks (6-0 overall, 1-0 Region 7-3A) offense to victory in their region opener. Quarterback Drayton Arnold threw only six passes, completing three – all for touchdowns.

But it was the Myrtle Beach defense, which came into the game allowing an average of 24 points per outing, that did the dirty work, scoring one touchdown, setting up two more with turnovers, and holding the Tigers scoreless for a rare shutout.

The skies opened up shortly before kickoff and neither team was able to rely on their passing attacks very effectively. Arnold was able to connect with tight end Cortez Brown for a 61-yard touchdown, but the wind and rain forced reliable kicker Sean Huggins to miss his first PAT of the season for a 6-0 lead.

The adverse conditions opened the door for Sinclair. He broke loose for a 62 TD run, and later added a 1-yard plunge that was set up by Brown’s interception deep in Tigers territory. The Seahawks misfired on both 2-point conversions and carried an 18-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

As the rains let up in the second half, the Seahawks poured it on. Arnold hit Kelton Greene for a 34-yard TD pass, and kicker Sean Huggins booted the PAT for a 25-0 lead. Sinclair churned out a 72-yard TD run in a muddy field, and Keonte Sessions made a 44-yard pick-six to give the Seahawks a 38-0 lead after three quarters of play. Myrtle Beach’s defense made late stand to preserve the shutout.

The Seahawks return home next week to face Lake City.
