MB girls, boys score top-10 finishes at state swim meet

mbswim-stateThe Myrtle Beach High boys and girls swim teams posted top-10 finishes at the SCHSL Swimming Championships at the USC Natatorium in Columbia on Saturday, one week after the event was postponed due to heavy flooding throughout the state.

The Lady Seahawks finished sixth overall (217 points) thanks to a pair of wins in relay events. Kennedy Drew, Danielle Flaherty, Olivia McGonigal and Carolina Millers worked together to claim the gold in the 200 medley in a time of 1:53.22, and the 200 freestyle (1:43.85).

Individually for the Lady Seahawks, McGonigal placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:00.19) and fifth in the 100 free (55:78), while Drew took third in the 100 free (:55.54) and sixth in the 50 free (:25.53).

The Myrtle Beach boys (139) finished 10th as a team as Isaiah Ivey placed second (:22.47) in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 backstroke. Sean McGonigal held on for third in the 50 free (23.09), and the duo teamed up with Vincent Goduto and Nestor Llanot to take fifth in the 500 free relay (1:34.68) and ninth in the 400 free relay.

The North Myrtle Beach boys took 13th overall, led by Tyzon Kinner’s ninth-place showing in the 100 butterfly (:58.23). He also joined Joshua Devine, Connor Britt-Tripp and River Newman to a eighth-place showing in the 400 free relay. The Lady Chiefs (68) claimed 15th.

The St. James boys, led by Casey Mitchell’s fifth-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (:57.54) and 500 free (5:04.93), placed 17th as a team (54). The St. James girls (131) placed 11th, led by a second-place showing by Kate Wolff in the 100 backstroke (:59.91). Sister Ana Wolff posted a fourth-place finish in the 50 free (:25:42), while Kate was close behind in eighth (26.41).

In Class 4-A action, the Socastee boys tied for 17th place (84) behind strong showings by the Bateson twins. Eddie Bateson took third in the 50 free (:22.07) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.19), and Chad Bateson was ninth in the 200 individual medley (2:02.72).

The Carolina Forest boys finished 30th with 14 points, led by Liam Zevgolis 16th-place showing in the 50 freestyle and 14th in the 100 Freestyle. The Lady Panthers (4) placed 26th, with medley relay team of Elizabeth Gatley, Taylor Steele, Ashley Woodall and Alexis Profilio 19th.
