Butler’s hat trick lifts Mutiny to season-opening victory

The Myrtle Beach Mutiny opened their second season with a blowout win over the Palmetto Bantams on Friday night, taking a 7-1 victory on their new pitch and under the guidance of a new coaching staff.

The Mutiny’s Tom Butler scored a hat trick to lead the offensive attack and the defense had a shutout in hand until a late blunder in goal gave the Bantams their only score in front of 350 fans at Ashley Booth Field.

The Mutiny are playing four of their six home games on the recently renovated soccer field, with the other two slated to be played next door at last year’s home pitch, Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Butler scored the only goal of the first half then added his second just 10 minutes into the second half. Danny Smith scored off a corner kick and Butler completed his hat-trick for 4-0 advantage.

Mutiny reserves Igor Souza added two late goals and Shadi Harb capped Myrtle Beach’s scoring. Mutiny goalkeeper Zac Scott made a mistake while trying to clear the ball that cost Myrtle Beach the shutout.

The new coaching staff features familiar names to the local soccer community. Co-head coaches Joel Banta and Ross Morgan also serve as directors of coaching for Coast FA, a local youth soccer club. The Mutiny hopes the team’s partnership with the club will help fill the stands and build a better relationship with local fans.

The Mutiny will face Chesterfield United, from Virginia next weekend away from home. The remainder of the team’s home schedule is June 8 vs. Chesterfield (Shaw), June 14 vs. RVA FC (Booth), June 19 vs. DC United U23s (Shaw), June 22 vs. CASL (Booth), and July 6 vs, Jacksonville United (Booth). All games begin at 7 p.m.
