MB, NMB top all-region; Freeman player of year

sjbase-helmethigh5Region 7-4A baseball champion Myrtle Beach and runner-up North Myrtle Beach dominated the all-region list that was announced Friday, but it was a fourth-place St. James standout who was crowned the player of the year.

St. James junior Trystan Freeman earned the honor after helping the Sharks rally late in the season to earn a playoff berth. He was one of four Sharks to make the list – first-team pitcher Anthony Peck, first-team outfielder Cole Prosser, and honorable mention Andrew Leo.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks and Chiefs combined for 20 spots on the all-region team, including some duplicate selections. Myrtle Beach’s Cameron Bodge and Lawson Cribb were first-team pitchers and fielders, while teammates Jayce Allen and Jackson Thomas made first team, Luke Edwards made second team, and Davis Goodroe earned honorable mention. Coach Tim Christy was named Coach of the Year.

North Myrtle Beach took the most spots, with a trio of pitchers making the cut – first-teamer Cole Gasque and second-teamers Dylan Doolittle and Dalton Simpson. Teammates Taylor Houia, Donald Hansis, Chase Hudson, Craig Matta and Colin Cordera made the all-region team at their respective positions, and Gasque, Doolittle and Simpson also earned honors in the field.
