MB scores 37 unanswered points to blast past Tigers

In its final game of the regular season, the Myrtle Beach High football team turned in perhaps its most impressive performance of the year in Thursday’s 54-26 road win over Wilson.

The Seahawks (6-4 overall, 3-1 Region 7-4A) scored 37 unanswered points over a 20-minute span to capture the No. 2 seed in the region. They are averaging 63 points per game over the course of their current three-game winning streak.

Myrtle Beach got a big night from Jermani Green on both sides of the ball, and special teams also got in the act to turn what began as a shootout into a blowout. The surge was aided by the ejection of Wilson wide receiver/defensive back Zion Keith, a Wake Forest commit who was thrown out in the second quarter for fighting.

Green rushed for three touchdowns, caught another, and also forced, recovered and returned a fumble that killed a deep Wilson drive to open the second half, maintaining the momentum created in the closing moments of the second quarter.

After four lead changes left the Tigers on top 20-17, Myrtle Beach scored two TDs in the final two minutes of the first half. Green caught a screen pass and rumbled for 24-yard TD. Following a blocked punt, quarterback Lawson Cribb threw his third TD pass of the game to Marcus Grissett to give the Seahawks a 30-20 halftime lead.

Green killed the Tigers’ opening drive of the second half with the strip and long run that helped set up Chad Toone’s second field goal of the night. Salim Sessions’ interception and Will Walton’s tackle to stop a fake punt both set up rushing TDs for Green that made it 47-20.

Myrtle Beach’s Luke Doty, who caught a TD pass earlier in the game, moved to QB in the fourth quarter and hit Da’Ron Finkley for a TD. Wilson scored a TD on the game’s final play to snap the 37-point unanswered point assault.

The Seahawks will learn their playoff opponent following Friday night’s games but assured themselves of a home game in the opening round.
