Unbeaten MB, Socastee on collision course atop region

The Myrtle Beach and Socastee girls tennis team remained undefeated with a pair of 7-0 victories in Wednesday’s matches. One team won’t be able to say the same one week from now.

The Lady Seahawks (7-0 overall, 1-0 Region VII-AAA) and Lady Braves (8-0, 2-0) swept matches with Waccamaw and North Myrtle Beach, respectively, by 7-0 scores to set up a key region showdown.

Myrtle Beach, the defending region champion, will play host to Socastee at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will assume the driver’s seat for this year’s region title and establish itself as a top contender in the Lower State.

Myrtle Beach made quick work of the Lady Warriors, with No. 1 singles Jessie Dumas and No. 2 Rachel Berkey scoring 6-0, 6-1 wins, then joining forces for an 8-1 win in No. 1 singles.

No. 3 Emma Springs and No. 4 Carolyn Gore also scored 6-0, 6-1 in singles and No. 5 Elisabeth Spielvogel winning 6-2, 6-0. No. 2 doubles Catherine Truluck and Katherine Woodard scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory to cap the sweep.

The Lady Braves were equally dominant, with No. 1 singles Rachel Gresko taking a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Amber Mincey. No. 2 Anna Brice-Cox defeated Caitlyn Wolf 6-1, 6-2; No. 3 Jordan Wesel beat Anna Coggashall 6-1,6-2; No. 4 Olivia Patton downed Makala Gore 6-0, 6-3; and No. 5 Ashlyn Burns defeated Kimarin Vereen 6-0 6-1.

Gresko and Wesel teamed up to beat Mincey and Wolf 8-6 in No. 1 doubles and Haley Duvall and Sydney Presley defeated Cameron Parker and Jessica Beasley 6-1 6-1 to complete the sweep and set the table for a rivalry match that has a lot more at stake than just bragging rights.
