MB sweeps, Socastee falls to tighten Region 7-3A race

The Region 7-3A girls tennis standings took a turn toward the tight side Tuesday when Socastee suffered a 4-3 loss to Wilson and Myrtle Beach scored a 7-0 sweep of Georgetown.

The Lady Braves (10-1 overall, 5-1 region) suffered their first overall and region defeat of the season, opening the door for the Lady Seahawks (11-2, 3-1) to re-enter the region race.

Socastee’s No. 1 singles Rachel Gresko defeated Whitney Timmons 6-2, 6-0 and No. 2 Anna Brice Cox swept Anjeli Om 6-0, 6-0, but the duo lost their first No. 1 doubles contest of the season to the same two in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 in the decisive match.

Socastee No. 3 Jordan Wesel took a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 win over Maggie Meggs, the third tiebreaker of the day, but the other one went Wilson’s way in No. 5 singles with Nikita Jona’s 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 win over Haley Duvall.

The Lady Tigers also won No. 4 singles with Mallorie Gainey’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over Olivia Patton, and No. 2 doubles with Sanjana Beeraka and Meghan Garand’s 6-3, 6-1 win over Ashlyn Burns and Sydney Presley.

The Lady Braves still own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Myrtle Beach, which made easy work of Georgetown. No. 1 singles Jessie Dumas and No. 2 Rachel Berkey scored 6-1, 6-0 victories over Anna Walsh and Michelle Johnson, respectively and collectively, taking down the same two in No. 1 doubles by an 8-0 score.

No. 3 singles Emma Springs defeated Taylor Graham 6-0, 6-2, No. 4 Carolyn Gore swept Addie Crawford 6-0, 6-0, and No. 5 Catherine Truluck won over Caitlyn Goodwin 6-2, 6-2. No. 2 doubles partners Bailey Deskins and Paxton Gentry downed Katie Glenn and Abby Siau 7-5, 6-1.

The turnabout leaves Socastee, Myrtle Beach and Wilson battling for the region’s only two playoff spots.
