MB takes Seahawk Walk to state championship game

mbfoot-paradeOne of the most unique sports traditions on the Grand Strand was held Friday, followed by one of the biggest days in Myrtle Beach football history – Saturday’s Class 3A state championship game.

In keeping with the 2008, ’09, and ’10 teams that made it all the way to the state finals, the Myrtle Beach team took the ceremonial “Seahawk Walk” around the multi-school campus to get on the team buses.

Dressed in sweatsuits and sunglasses for the unseasonably warm occasion, the Seahawks strolled along the pathway that connects all five Myrtle Beach schools. MB Primary, Elementary, Intermediate and Middle students held handmade signs and cheered the team on while players gave high-fives and said hello to former teachers before boarding the bus at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Few expected this team to be taking the victory tour this year, not after a 1-3 start and a loss to a Carolina Forest team that didn’t win another game all season. But the playoffs don’t start in September, and Myrtle Beach managed to turn the corner just in time to make a miraculous postseason run by winning nine of its last 10 games, many of them in dramatic fashion.

The real magic began in the regular-season finale at North Myrtle Beach when the Seahawks erased a two-touchdown deficit in the second half to beat the rival Chiefs 30-28. Perhaps more impressive was Myrtle Beach’s 35-0 playoff opening win over Berkeley as the Seahawks’ much-maligned defense posted a shutout.

The defense continued to come up huge as Myrtle Beach had to go on the road to beat a pair of No. 1 seeds. The Seahawks trailed at halftime in both but got strong second halves from both sides of the ball to defeat Crestwood 31-27 and Strom Thurmond 21-16. Then came last week’s thrilling 20-6 win over visiting Marlboro County as Myrtle Beach continued to beat the odds.

Now there’s one more obstacle to clear, and this one is bigger than all the others – No. 1 ranked and undefeated Daniel. The Seahawks are once again the underdog in this matchup, but this team seems to have a knack for doing the impossible. The youngsters who started the season with little success are now a hungry bunch looking to carry on the tradition of the teams that have come before them.

Starting with the Seahawk Walk, and perhaps ending with another victory parade.
