MB’s Golson rallies Irish to triple OT victory over Pitt

Everett Golson showed the nation glimpses of the magic that Myrtle Beach High fans got to see for four years.

Notre Dame’s redshirt freshman quarterback improvised the game-tying touchdown drive, then scored the game- winning TD in triple overtime to lead the Irish to a 29-26 comeback victory over visiting Pitt on Saturday.

Golson dived into the end zone on a 1-yard QB sneak, which was reviewed and confirmed to send Notre Dame Stadium into a frenzy and keep the No. 3-ranked Irish’s national championship hopes alive at a perfect 9-0.

Golson completed 23 of 42 passes for 227 yards and two TDs, and he added 74 yards rushing with the game-winning TD. He also threw and interception and was taken out of the game on a couple of occasions.

The strong finish came after a frustrating day for Golson and the Irish offense. He was briefly replaced by backup Tommy Dees but neither was able to move the ball as Notre Dame settled for only a pair of field goals.

Trailing 20-6 entering the fourth quarter, the light finally came on for Golson. He threw an 11-yard TD pass to T.J. Jones with 13 minutes left but the point-after kick was no good and the Irish still trailed 20-12.

Golson threw an interception in the end zone with 5 minutes remaining that left the Irish trailing 20-12, but the Notre Dame defense got the ball back at midfield with 3 minutes left. That’s when Golson did his thing.

On the first play, Golson scrambled for several seconds before hooking up with DaVaris Daniels for 45 yards. Golson then found no room on a designed QB draw but dropped back and hit Theo Riddick for the touchdown.

On the critical 2-point conversion, the Irish called a throw-back screen that the Pitt defense sniffed out, so Golson tucked the ball and dived across the goalline for the game-tying TD with 2 minutes remaining.

Both teams kicked field goals in the first overtime period, and Notre Dame’s Cierre Wood fumbled on the goalline to start the second OT. Pitt responded with three runs and a field goal try that went wide right.

Pitt settled for a field goal in the top half of the third OT, but Golson threw for a first down and ran for another to give the Irish first-and-goal at the 1. He went over the top of the pile and was mobbed by teammates.
