MB’s McGonigal chooses to walk on with Gamecocks

mbfoot-44sackThe Grand Strand will have another major college football walk-on to root for next season – Myrtle Beach High senior defensive end/linebacker Sean McGonigal.

Following in the footsteps of former Socastee and current Clemson standout Hunter Renfrow, McGonigal has decided to attend rival South Carolina as a preferred walk-on, bypassing the Ivy League colleges and smaller schools that have been bidding for his services.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pounder, who like Renfrow was considered undersized for their positions to play major college football, will attempt to earn his scholarship on the field. McGonigal had a breakout senior season with 89 tackles, including 30 for losses. His 19.5 sacks were second best in the state.

McGonigal was named first team all-state by the the High School Sports Report and Region 7-4A Defensive Player of the Year. Also an all-state swimmer and honor student, McGonigal is eligible for academic scholarships while he battles for a free ride with the Gamecocks.
