MB’s Mitchell wins crown; CF, NMB have close calls

Myrtle Beach High’s Daniel Mitchell captured the SCHSL individual state championship in the 195-pound class on Saturday in Anderson, ending an eight-year drought for the Seahawks resurgent program.

The senior took a hard-fought 6-4 decision over Cane Bay’s Chase Smith, whom he lost to a week earlier in the Lower State tournament. Mitchell turned the tables in the state final to deliver the Seahawks their first state champion since Blake Holt in 2010 crown and cap Mitchell’s successful football and wrestling career.

“Like a breath of fresh air,” Mitchell said of the feeling of winning his first state championship in any sport in his final attempt. “We couldn’t get the team title so this is the next best thing. I think our program is on the way up under (first-year coach Brandon Feix). He told me ‘You can make history and turn this program around.’ ”

Feix called it a “coach’s dream of having a kid like Daniel on their team. I am honored to have had an opportunity to coach him. It has been eight years since Myrtle Beach has had a champ, and there is nobody more deserving than Daniel.”

Myrtle Beach teammate Pedro Reyes also joined Mitchell on the podium with a third-place finish in the 182-pound class. He claimed an 8-4 decision over North Myrtle Beach’s Curtis Wolfe in the consolation match.

North Myrtle Beach’s Kwame Livingston lost a heartbreaker in the 285-pound final. David Maholtz of Eastside won a 6-5 decision over Livingston in triple overtime by earning an escape in sudden death.

North Myrtle Beach had another close call with an individual title as Rahsaan Vereen outdueled Eastside’s Chance Pride for a 4-1 decision and a third-place finish in the 160-pound class.

Chiefs teammate Brennan Michael also placed third with a 2-0 decision over Eastside’s Alex Brown in the 152-pound division.

In Class 5A, Carolina Forest’s PJ Wunderlich advanced to the championship of the 126-pound class but suffered a 6-2 decision loss to Jordan Aluyan of Fort Dorchester.
