MB’s Zola Budd-Pieterse wins Divas Half Marathon

Zola Pieterse from Myrtle Beach has won the first ever Divas Run Half Marathon held in North Myrtle Beach with a finishing time of 1:22:47. Her 16 year old daughter Lisa Pieterse  won the women’s side of the 5K event with a finishing time of 19:38.

Kicking off at 7am along Main Street, the Divas Run began with nearly 4000 runners tracking almost the length of the city from Main St. to Cherry Grove, down to 27th Ave South and then returning to the finish line and post race party along Main. The sold out event featured a 13.1 mile half marathon distance and a 3.1 mile 5k event.

Zola Pieterse is best known by her maiden name Zola Budd, a former Olympian track star from South Africa currently living in Myrtle Beach and volunteering as an assistant track coach for Coastal Carolina University. She previously won the Bi-Lo half marathon with a time slightly faster than her performance today.

Myrtle Beach’s Catherine Franklin was the next closest local finisher in the half marathon, coming in 37th place with a time of 1:43:29.

In the 5k event, Myrtle Beach’s Michelle Battistelli finished fifth in Women’s followed by Sue Gordon in eight place and Jeanne Mcdonald  Stanley in ninth place.

North Myrtle Beach’s Amanda Griste ran the 13.1 mile course for the first time ever. Her previous longest race was 3.1 miles. She finished with a time of 3:18.  For her, it wasn’t about the time, but more about the experience.  She says she did it “Just to see if I could do it. I’m not a runner but I thought this would be a good one, with all women. It was very organized.”

Lynn Everhart, also from North Myrtle Beach said that having all women was the biggest draw for her. She competed in the 5K race and said “All the positive energy from the girls was great. Women coming together for fun and exercise in our town made it really cool. ”

The Divas Half Marathon series is held in select cities around the United States including Honolulu, HI, Vail, CO, Long Island, NY and San Juan, Puerto Rico. It includes such Diva like activities as a boa and tiara station along the course, champagne toast at the finish line, and fun activities along the course.
