Miles captures Open title as locals honor fallen surfers

Addison Miles of Myrtle Beach won the Open division of the Atlantic Surfing Federation SC’s Village Surf Shoppe Anniversary and Herndon/Lebel Memorial Surfoff over the weekend.

In addition to celebrating Village Surf Shoppe’s 43rd anniversary, the event also served as the 13th annual tribute to best friends and fellow surfers Miles Herndon and J.J. Lebel, who died in a tragic car accident at the ages of 16 and 17, respectively.

The next summer organizers decided to combine Village Surf Shoppe’s anniversary with a memorial to the two local surfers. Now local surfers come from all over the Grand Strand and beyond to honor their fallen fellow surfers.

“We felt we had to make something good come out of such a tragedy, and it’s exceeded our wildest expectations,” ASF SC Director Denny Green said. “The contest has become a memorial to all surfers who we have lost, not just Miles and JJ.”
