Mingo Bay Baseball: Sharks open play with shutout win

mbbase-sjslideThe St. James High baseball team found something Monday it hasn’t had since opening week – a winning streak.

The Sharks defeated Robinson (VA) 3-0 in the first round of the Mingo Bay Baseball Classic thanks to a complete-game shutout by pitcher Maddy Hammonds. He scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out six batters for the win.

Hammonds got all the run support he needed in the second inning. Tyler String drove in a run and scored in the key frame. The Sharks managed only five hits to Robinson’s six but were able to string together their second win after their 9-6 victory over Marlboro County last week snapped a nine-game losing streak.

In other Mingo Bay action, Socastee defeated Logan (WV) 11-6, and Conway lost a 1-0 pitchers’ duel with Greenbriar Christian. Myrtle Beach was shut out by Cherry Hill East (NJ) 11-0, and Carolina Forest lost by the same score to Louisa County (VA).
