Mingo Bay Baseball: Sharks rally, Panthers roll on Day 2

sjbase-22pitchThe Carolina Forest High baseball team exploded for 11 runs in the fourth inning to claim a 13-2 mercy rule victory over Spring Valley (WV) in Tuesday’s second round of the Mingo Bay Classic.

The Panthers used a solid outing on the mound by senior Bryar Johnson, who allowed only three hits and one earned run in four innings of work.

At the plate, senior Christian Maggio went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, junior Matt Beale went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, sophomore Blake Cox went 1-for-2 with a triple and four RBIs, and freshman Nolan Edwards went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Panthers are back in action Wednesday at 1:30 pm against High Point Christian.

* St. James 8, Battlefield (VA) 5: The Sharks won their third straight win in dramatic fashion, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to pull out the victory.

Tied at 3-all entering the bottom of the sixth, St. James roughed up Battlefield pitcher Petty Kane. Austin Short went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored to lead the Sharks’ offense.

St. James starting pitcher Tyler String went 2-for-3 at the plate and took a no decision after throwing five solid innings. Reliever Nick Bray earned the win.

* George Washington (WV) 7, Myrtle Beach 5: The Seahawks were victimized by one big inning for the second straight day in the Mingo Bay Baseball Classic.

Myrtle Beach led 2-0 early but couldn’t make it hold up as George Washington tied it up in the fourth inning and broke out for five runs in the fifth en route to the victory.

The Seahawks held a 10-8 edge in hitting but committed two errors to hurt the cause.
