Baseball: Thompson hurls one-hitter in Mingo Bay tilt

socbase-3pitch2High school baseball teams come from all over the country come to compete in the Mingo Bay Classic and see some of Myrtle Beach’s top attractions.

One Monday, one unfortunate team started their spring break staring down the barrel of Socastee pitcher Dylan Thompson’s right arm. The junior struck out 14 batters and allowed only one hit in the Braves’ 3-0 victory over Greenbrier Christian (VA).

Thompson got all the offensive support he needed early on as the Braves (14-2) scored one run in the first and two in the second. Hunter Renfrow collected two hits and an RBI and Kyle Smith went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Thompson got two hits of his own to lead Socastee at the plate and on the mound, but it was on the latter where he did the most damage, holding Greenbrier Christian at bay all the way.

* Conway 5, Notre Dame (WV) 0: Grant Holmes struck out 13 batters and allowed only one hit over six innings to lead the Tigers to a shutout victory.

* Carolina Forest 8, South County 3: The Panthers (7-9) erupted for eight runs to roll the the Mingo Bay Classic victory.

* St. James 4, Canfield (VA) 3: The Sharks battled to a one-run victory at the Shark Park.
