Montverde tops St. John’s for Beach Ball Classic title

montverdeMontverde (FL) Academy held off a furious comeback by St. John’s College Prep (Washington D.C.) for a 52-48 victory to capture the 2015 Beach Ball Classic Championship.

Montverde (15-1), the #2 ranked team in the nation, scored the last sic points of the first half to take a 32-23 lead into the locker room.  After trading baskets to open the second half, Montverde appeared to blow the game wide open with a 12-0 run to take a commanding 45-25 lead with 9:29 to play.

St. John’s (12-1), trailing 47-30 with 7:44 to play in regulation, scored 16 unanswered points to close the gap to just one point on Jeffrey Dowtin’s 3-point basket with 1:06 to play.

Montverde, which had gone scoreless for 7:07 finally tallied a point with 37 seconds remaining on a free throw by Devonta Jordan.

St. John’s last chance at victory came when Anthony Cowan’s 3-point attempt with six seconds remaining and down two at 50-48 went in and out.  Micah Potter sealed the victory with a pair of free throws at the final buzzer.

Montverde, playing in its first Beach Ball Classic,  was led by Most Valuable Player Micah Potter’s 19 points while freshman sensation RJ Barrett posted 16 points and eight rebounds.

* Seton Hall Prep (NJ) scored a come-from-behind 77-67 victory over Shadow Mountain (AZ) to capture third place in the 35th Annual Beach Ball Classic.

Trailing 30-20 at the half, Seton Hall (6-1; West Orange, NJ) scored the first 15 points coming out of the locker room to take a 35-30 lead on a TJ Gibbs 3-point basket with 12:05 on the clock.

The Pirates went on to lead the rest of the way to earn the 3rd place trophy. Gibbs led the way for Seton Hall with a career-high 36 points and 10 rebounds. Shadow Mountain (10-4; Phoenix, AZ) was led by JJ Rhymes 29 points.

* Archbishop Moeller (OH) defeated #6 ranked Mater Dei (CA) 43-40 to take home fifth place in the 35th Annual Beach Ball Classic. Moeller (9-1; Cincinnati, OH) never trailed in the contest but could not put Mater Dei (13-2; Santa Ana, CA) away as the game was close throughout.

In the first half, Moeller moved the ball around on offense and slowed the game to a near crawl.  The methodical play saw the Crusaders build seven-point advantages three times with the last being at 16-9 with 5:14 to play.  Michael Wang connected on a 3-point basket and Justice Sueing followed with a layup at the 2:36 mark to pull Mater Dei to within two points at 16-14.

Moeller’s Riley Voss connected on a one-handed running jumper just beyond the free throw line to give the Crusaders an 18-14 lead at halftime. In the second 16-minute half, Moeller opened its largest margin of he game with an 11-2 run that was capped at the 7:56 mark by a Keegan McDowell 3-point basket to give the Crusaders a 35-25 advantage.

Mater Dei chipped away at the lead and Sueing’s two free throws pulled the Monarchs to within one at 37-36 with 3:02 on the clock.

* Mustang (OK) scored the first nine points of the game and cruised to an 80-67 victory over Mullins to take the Consolation Bracket Championship in the 35th Annual Beach Ball Classic.

Mustang (4-7) never trailed in the game and led by as many as 24 points in the first half before cruising to the victory.  Mustang was led by Jakolby Long’s 25 points while Curtis Haywood added 19 points and six assists for the Broncos. Mullins (4-7) was paced by Nizohn Powell’s 17 points as he connected on 6-of-9 from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc.

Powell connected on all of his five treys in a span of 3:01 in the first half.  Javaris Smith added 16 points as he connected on 7-of-9 from the field.  Jaleek Felton, who scored a Beach Ball Classic single game record of 55 points the night before, was held to just 11 points.  Felton posted a four-game total of 123 points to put him second all-time in the BBC record book.
