Moody expected back soon but Tigers have other issues

Conway High’s biggest question mark coming out of spring practice should be answered in the next three weeks. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the rest of them may take until well into the fall to resolve.

Conway quarterback phenom Mykal Moody missed out on the Tigers’ recently wrapped up spring drills due to a broken collarbone he suffered at a football camp for blue-chip recruits, but he is expected back by mid-June.

That’s good news for the Tigers’ QB position, where the rising senior rushed and passed for more than 3,000 yards and 42 touchdowns last season. But the unknown is what has coach Chuck Jordan concerned.

“We have a great deep threat in Malcolm Green (and) we have a great run and pass threat in Mykal Moody,” Jordan said following the Tigers’ spring game. “Blocking for them is another question.”

The Tigers, whose trademark used to be a big, physical offensive and defensive lines that dominated the line of scrimmage with a ground-and-pound style, are now faced with a different dilemma – a lack of size and depth up front.

Both sides of the ball were decimated by graduation up front, although Conway has some excellent skill players off the front line. Still, Jordan knows games are often decided in the trenches and says the Tigers have some serious holes to fill.

“Where will we find a few extra (offensive and defensive linemen and) can we play more consistently on defense?” Jordan said of the Tigers’ two biggest question marks. “We are slow coming on the OL, but getting there. We were pleased with our DL overall but need more depth.”

Jordan also hopes to find a punter and kicker to help the Tigers out on special teams, but no progress was made in that area in the spring. Jordan hopes the team comes together over the summer so the Tigers can turn some of their big question marks into exclamation points.
