Moody rallies Tigers past South Florence, 46-35

Conway quarterback Mykal Moody rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally the Tigers to a 46-35 victory over South Florence on Friday night in The Backyard.

Moody finished with 22 carries for 183 yards and four rushing TDs and completed 15 of his 19 passes for 130 yards to lift the Tigers to the win.

Trailing 35-32 in the final period, Conway got TD runs of 84 and 54 yards on back-to-back carries by Moody and the Tigers defense kept the Bruins’ high-powered offense out of the end zone the rest of the way.

Conway’s Malcolm Green picked off a pass by Ethan Grainger, who threw four touchdowns on the night, late in the game to preserve the victory. Green also put the Tigers on the scoreboard early with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown following Grainger’s first TD pass.

Grainger threw a pair of TD passes to Te’Von Johnson, who finished the game with 14 receptions and three TDs, in the first half to build a 28-14 lead. Moody hit Juquail Crosland for a 34-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 28-20 at the half, then he hit Green for a 5-yard TD to cut it to 28-26 following a failed 2-point conversion.

Following a fumble recovery by Conway, Moody led the Tigers on a TD drive with a 12-yard run to take their first lead of the night midway through the third period at 32-28.

South Florence responded with another Grainger-to-Johnson TD connection to retake the lead at 35-32 late in the third, but it was all Moody and the Tigers in the final frame. Moody’s 84-yard TD run was followed by a 54-yarder on his next carry, helping him surpass the 1,000-yard mark in both rushing and passing on the season.

The victory pits Conway back in the thick of the region championship picture. The Tigers (7-2 overall, 2-1 Region VIII-AAAA) moves into a tie atop the standings with the Bruins, against whom they own the tiebreaker, and Carolina Forest and West Florence.

The Tigers travel to Sumter next week before closing out the regular season against rival Carolina Forest, which defeated the Gamecocks 27-11 on Friday.
