Moody sparks Conway to comeback over Bulldogs

There have been a lot of great football games between Conway and Marlboro County over the years, but none like the madness that unfolded in Friday night’s clash at The Backyard.

Conway High quarterback Mykal Moody threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to freshman Bryan Edwards to put the Tigers ahead in the final 2 minutes, then he switched to defense and intercepted a pass to end the Bulldogs’ final threat in a 42-40 comeback victory for the Tigers (2-3).

Conway trailed 34-20 in the fourth quarter and appeared to be dead in the water when Moody dived in from 1-yard out to cut the deficit in half.

Following a defensive stop of the Bulldogs, Conway’s Kahmil Cooper broke free for an 80-yard TD connection with Moody, and a 2-point conversion gave the Tigers’ their first lead since 7-6 in the first quarter.

That was when Moody scored the first of the six TDs he had a hand in on the night. His 17-yard TD put Conway on top, but it was shortlived as Marlboro County quarterback Xavier Adams kept the Tigers defense on its heels with five TD passes on the night.

Moody and Malcolm Green teamed up for a air of TD passes in the second quarter – one from 10 yards out and another from 55 yards – as the Tigers tied it up at halftime 20-20.

But Marlboro County started to pull away with back-to-back TD drives to open the second half. Raheem Ward scored on a pair of long TD runs, the second one to give the Bulldogs a 40-36 edge in the final stages before Moody worked his last-minute magic.

Moody threw for more than 300 yards and rushed for 74 yards to lead the Tigers, who face rival Myrtle Beach for the Battle of the Victory Bell next week.
