Mudcats snap MB Pelicans’ eight-game winning streak

pel-pitchThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost their first game in nine contests in a 10-4 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Mudcats on Monday night at Pelicans Ballpark.

It was the worst loss since a 10-3 defeat on Opening Night and marked only the second time this season that the Pelicans have surrendered double-digit runs in a game.

The Pelicans (37-18) struck first on Monday. After sending the minimum to the plate in the first, the club drew a pair of walks in the second. With two on and one out, Hanser Alberto smashed a triple off the left field fence. Two runs in came across on the triple to give the Birds 2-0.

Carolina (23-32) scored the next ten runs. With one out, the Mudcats connected for three straight hits in the third. The third was a double from Erik Gonzalez, which scored two runs. Three batters later, Jerrud Sabourin singled home Gonzalez to pull ahead 3-2.

The Myrtle Beach staff walked five batters and hit a batter in the fifth inning. The Mudcats scored three runs without the benefit of a base hit. The first three reached off of Pelicans starter Luis Parra. With the bases loaded, Sam Stafford allowed all three inherited runners to score on two bases loaded walks and a hit batter. Parra completed just 4 2/3 innings, allowing a career-high eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits, four walks, and three strikeouts.

The offense was held silent until the seventh inning. Cole Sulser tossed six innings of two-run ball in his third quality start. The Birds got right after Jacob Lee and the bullpen. On an infield single, an error, a fly ball, and a fielder’s choice, Hanser Alberto scored. Alberto knocked in another on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

With the score 8-4, Gonzalez clubbed his third extra-base hit, a triple, to score two more runs in the ninth inning, pulling ahead 10-4.

The score held that way, as Elvis Araujo tossed a scoreless ninth to finish off the Pelicans. Sulser (2-5) earned the win and Parra (5-4) took the loss.

The Pelicans finish the homestand and head on the road for three games at Lynchburg. First pitch Tuesday night is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
