In my line of work as a talk show host, I get asked a lot of questions about my work. How did I get into this job? What did I study in school? How early do I wake up every day?

My favorite question though is what do I like most about my job? What’s my favorite part and anyone who knows me or listens to my show knows that it’s interviews. I enjoy the debate aspect and mixing it up with callers but nothing beats a good interview. The coaches, athletes, and individuals in sports all have stories to tell and my challenge is getting that story out of them. Getting them out of the mind of an Athlete talking to the media and just… talk.

Occasionally I am presented with one of those opportunities where the story is bigger than sports and that happened today. This is what I call an “instant classic”. As soon as it ended I knew I had conducted one of the most compelling interviews in the history of my talk show.

If you don’t know who Daniel Rodriguez is, you’re about to find out. If you know his story, you’re about to learn more.

Daniel is a Senior on the Clemson University Football team. Not only is he a Senior, but he’s the oldest player on the team at 26 years old. He was an athlete first in high school that didn’t care too much for his grades. When he graduated high school, college wasn’t a great option. Then while kicking back during Senior Week in Myrtle Beach he got a phone call that his father was very ill. He had been ill but his Mother asked him to come home immediately. As it turns out, his Father had already passed away.

Rodriguez made the decision to get out of town and do so by way of the United States Army – Infantry Division. Thanks to a little marijuana use he wasn’t qualified to do much else that interested him. He recently wrote his Memoir of his story going through basic training, then immediately being shipped off to Iraq in the midst of a war. He fought in one of the bloodiest battles on record in Afghanistan. Watched countless friends get killed. Earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor. And he made a promise to a fallen friend that he made certain to follow through on involving his love of sports and football.

That is the basis of my conversation with Daniel Rodriguez discussing his memoir; RISE: A Soldier, A Dream, And A Promise Kept.
