Myrtle Beach comes back in second half to stun Knights

mbfoot-9runMyrtle Beach High scored 17 unanswered points while the defense pitched a shutout in the second half as the second-seeded Seahawks rallied to defeat top-seeded Crestwood 31-27 in Friday night’s second-round playoff game on the road.

Myrtle Beach quarterback Drayton Arnold threw a 28-yard touchdown strike to Malik Waring with under 4 minutes remaining in the game for the go-ahead touchdown. The Seahawks (8-4) defense did the rest, helping Myrtle Beach advance to the third round of the Class 3A playoffs.

It was a huge turnaround for the Myrtle Beach defense after Crestwood scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the night. The Knights were held off the scoreboard over their final six series and repeatedly set up the offense in good field position.

Arnold came out throwing early, hitting Graham Vaughn for a 45-yard TD strike on the opening drive of the game and later finding Kalton Greene for an 81-yard TD that put the Seahawks on top early. But Crestwood got a pair of rushing TDs from Justin McDaniel and Tyshawn Williams for a 27-14 halftime lead.

Myrtle Beach finally got its ground game going in the second half and Brandon Sinclair capped a long drive with a 4-yard TD run. Following a botched punt snap deep in Crestwood territory, the Seahawks settled for a 35-yard field goal by Sean Huggins to cut the deficit to 27-24.

That set the stage for some more late heroics by Arnold, who rallied the Seahawks two weeks ago in a win over North Myrtle Beach. This time he threw one up for the leaping Waring for the game-winner. Arnold completed 17 of 23 passes for 268 yards and three TDs.

Myrtle Beach will travel to Strom Thurmond next week to face the Region 5-3A champion Rebels. Strom Thurmond advanced by defeating North Myrtle Beach, and sit with a 11-1 record on the season.
