Swimming: MB girls, boys finish 1-2 at Socastee meet

mbgswim-ripleysThe Myrtle Beach High girls swim team won the 14-team Socastee Invitational on Saturday at the Coastal Carolina University Aquatic Center.

The Lady Seahawks compiled 155 points to edge West Florence (133), and Carolina Forest (127) finished a close third. St. James (113) eked out a top-five showing, followed by North Myrtle Beach (101) in sixth, host Socastee (42) in eighth, and Conway (20) in 10th place.

The Myrtle Beach boys (144) narrlowly missed out on making it a sweep by finishing second to Waccamaw (172). Carolina Forest (127) was third, Socastee (126) finished fourth, NMB took sixth (83), St. James was seventh (57), and Conway placed 12th (10).

Individually for Carolina Forest, the girls were led by  Taylor Steele with a first-place finish in the 100 Breastroke and third place in the 200 Individual Medley. Other top 6 finishes include; Alexis Porfilio – 5th in 50 Free and Elizabeth Gatley 5th in 100 Free. The girls 200 Medley Relay consisting of Elizabeth Gatley, Steele, Ashley Woodall and Alexis Porfilio finished second, and the 200 Free Relay with Alexis Porfilio, Ashley Woodall, Jensen Helgerson and Anna Fortenberry placed third. Elizabeth Gatley, Taylor Steele, Anna Fortenberry and Jensen Helgerson were the runner-ups in the 400 Free Relay.

The Panthers also had relay success as Connor Steele, Liam Zevgolis, Jack Vaught and Grice Fortenberry placed third in the 200 Free Relay and fifth in the 200 Medley Relay. Deshawn Kuhl, Connor Campbell, Garrett Randall and David Zevgolis took 6th in the 400 Free Relay.

The North Myrtle Beach girls received solid performances from seventh grader Jenna Downey and eighth grader Alexis Ross- as each swam personal bests in their 4 events, with a total of 19 personal bests swam by the Lady Chiefs. The boys were led by Connor Britt-Tripp, JP Stephenson and Tyzon Kinner. The Chiefs swam for six personal bests. The Chiefs host the meet next Saturday at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic Center.

* Christian Academy participated in the First Baptist hosted swim meet at the LTP pool this past Saturday.  Added to the SCISA state cut team list were Miles Washington (200 Freestyle), Caroline Surface (50 freestyle), Anson Vossberg (50 freestyle), Emie Jackson (100 Butterfly, 100 breaststroke) and Emma Claire Everett (100 freestyle).
