Lewis up to old (hat) trick as Myrtle Beach sweeps Chiefs

In a literal color clash between Myrtle Beach’s green and North Myrtle Beach’s blue, the soccer rivals shared one common color and cause Monday – pink for “Kickin’ To Cure It” night at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

With the girls donning pink shoelaces and the boys sporting pink armbands to highlight breast cancer awareness, Myrtle Beach swept North Myrtle Beach in the Region VIII-AAA showdown.

The Lady Seahawks battled to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Lady Chiefs, while the Myrtle Beach boys put on a more offensive affair in the nightcap.

Maybe Myrtle Beach High forward Mason Lewis’ “Athlete of the Week” award came one week too early.

On the same day the Seahawks junior earned the “Mammy” for his play in leading his team to the Airport Select Invitational, Lewis scored a hat trick in Monday night’s 6-1 victory over the visiting Chiefs.

Lewis converted assists by Ryan Arambula and Aristen Baku in the first half to put the Seahawks (11-2-1 overall, 3-0 Region VIII-AAA) on top 2-0 at the intermission.

Then, after Alex Osuna scored in the opening minute of the second half on an assist by Arambula, Lewis returned the favor to Baku with an assist at the 52-minute mark.

Not to be outdone, Baku set up Lewis for his third goal of the night just 3 minutes later for a dominating 5-0 lead. Josh Newell rounded out Myrtle Beach’s scoring with an unassisted goal in the 60th minute.

North Myrtle Beach (7-6, 2-2) avoided the shutout when Ian Fellenz finally got one past Seahawks goalkeeper Jose Arrendondo, who made three saves and blocked a penalty kick.

After a scoreless first half, Myrtle Beach’s Mackenzie Jones executed a perfect corner-kick assist to Shakiyra Peeples, who put the ball in the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Myrtle Beach goalkeeper Jessica Deforge came away with a shutout, recording seven saves in the process.
