Seahawks spike Camden, advance to first state final

The walls at Myrtle Beach High are filled with state championship and runner-up banners for football, basketball and tennis.

Now the Seahawks can add volleyball to the wall of fame.

Myrtle Beach swept Camden 3-0 in the Lower State Championship on Wednesday night to advance to the Class AAA state Championship on Saturday. The Lady Seahawks will face East Side at 3:30 p.m. at White Knoll High School.

The Lady Seahawks already surpassed the program’s previous best showing by advancing to the Lower State Finals, and they proved they weren’t content with just getting there. Instead, they dominated the Lady Bulldogs.

“We started off slow, but fortunately so did Camden,” Myrtle Beach coach Larry Church said. “I think both teams were a little nervous. There was an incredible crowd, all their fans dressed in black, and we traveled well too. It was a great atmosphere and I think that eventually helped us because our girls seemed to feed off the energy.”

With the first game tied at 16-all, Myrtle Beach seized control late to roll for a 25-18 victory. The second game proved to be the Lady Seahawks’ toughest challenge, with Camden tying it up at 22-all late.

But Myrtle Beach scored the final three points for a 25-22 win, then used that momentum to put on perhaps their finest performance of the season in the third and final game, surging to a 25-13 match-clinching victory.

“I didn’t expect to sweep, especially after that first game,” Church admitted. “Even in the second game it came down to the very end, then we jumped all over them in the third. It was the single best game we’ve played all year.”

Perfect timing for a team that may be peaking just in time for the state title match. The Lady Seahawks seem to be firing on all cylinders, with key players coming through at every position.

Junior Meagan Milligan led the Lady Seahawks with 10 kills and seven blocks, senior Amy Wiggins had nine kills and six blocks, and sophomore Shelby Sheets added seven kills and six aces. It all adds up to the program’s first-ever trip to the state championship.

“We don’t know anything about East Side, but we didn’t know anything about Camden either,” Church said. “I think if we had watched too much film on them we would have made adjustments that are out of our character. We just want to do what we do best and let the chips fall where they may.”

Either way, it’s already a banner season for the Lady Seahawks.
