Myrtle Beach uses the long ball to rally past Red Sox

pel-bolingerThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans used the long ball to rally back to beat the Salem Red Sox 4-2 in the middle game of the set at Lewis Gale Field on Saturday night.

Royce Bolinger hit a go-ahead home run, and Jorge Alfaro added an insurance longball in the sixth. In the first game back from Sam Wolff off of the disabled list, Cody Buckel earned the win in relief, retiring the final 11 batters he faced.

Wolff recorded the first five outs for the Pelicans (19-18, 63-42) before turning things over to Buckel. He came in with two on and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. His first pitch to Matty Johnson missed inside and got to the backstop, and Mario Martinez broke for home from third base. Pelicans catcher Jorge Alfaro fielded it behind home plate and threw back to the plate, where Buckel tagged him out Martinez escape the jam.

Still scoreless in the third, Salem (15-20, 48-55) put the first four runners aboard. With men at the corners, the Red Sox plated the first run of the game on a throwing error from Buckel, allowing Johnson to score from third base. Buckel then surrendered a single and a walk to load the bases but came back with a strikeout and a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the inning with just one run allowed.

It was the beginning of a fantastic finish for Buckel who pitched a perfect fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In total, he went 4 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and three walks and struck out six, a season-high.
