NMB battles to double OT before late FG lifts Wilson

North Myrtle Beach football fans might want to beef up their health insurance policies. Watching the Chiefs has been hazardous to one’s health over the past few Fridays.

North Myrtle Beach played its second straight overtime game on Friday night before falling to host Wilson 37-34 in double OT at Florence Memorial Stadium. The tough loss comes after a 20-19 overtime victory over Georgetown last week.

Wilson’s Luke Carter kicked a walk-off 24-yard field goal to cap a wild game that saw several lead and momentum changes. North Myrtle Beach scored a pair of early defensive touchdowns to jump out to a 14-0 lead, and the Chiefs were up 21-7 with less than 2 minutes left in the first half thanks to a pair of touchdowns by Colby Gore.

With the Chiefs threatening to add to the score, Wilson’s Jarod LeSane made an 80-yard pick-six and quarterback James “Turtle” Richardson scored his second rushing touchdown to tie it up at halftime at 21-all. Carter booted his first field goal early in the third quarter to give the Tigers their first lead of the game at 24-21, and Richardson made it a run of 24 unnaswered points with his third rushing TD for a 31-21 advantage.

The Chiefs called on their late-game heroics once again, cutting the deficit to 31-28 and marching down field to set up Christian Buis’ last-second field goal that sent it into overtime. The two kickers traded field goals in the first overtime, but the Chiefs were intercepted in their half of double OT as the Tigers simply lined up the ball for the game-winning kick.

North Myrtle Beach plays host to St. James next week.
