NMB, CF join for nine of 15 local Lower State qualifiers

nmbwrestle-michaelpinNorth Myrtle Beach had five of the 10 local qualifiers in Saturday’s Class 4A Lower State wrestling tournament, and Carolina Forest scored four of five state qualifiers in the Class 5A Lower States. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to next week’s state tournament.

North Myrtle Beach was led by the area’s only Lower State champion, 145-pounder Brennan Michael, who claimed a 6-3 decision over Beaufort’s Justin Campbell. The Chiefs also had three-runners-up – Rahsaan Vereen (152), Curtis Wolfe (170) and Kwame Livingston (285). Tanner Collins (138) placed fourth.

St. James had three qualifiers, all third-place finishers, in Ethan Mason (106), Brandon Ellis (145) and Will Stewart (170). Myrtle Beach had a pair of qualifiers, including runner-up Stephen Desjardins (182) and third-place Pedro Reyes.

In Class 5A, Carolina Forest posted four of the five local qualifiers, led by John Winzenried’s runner-up finish in the 152-pound division. Teammate Matt Ashworth (106) placed third, and P.J. Wunderlich (113) and Noah Sritan (138) finished fourth. Conway’s Jody Hiott (220) placed third as the Tigers’ lone qualifier.
