NMB takes control of region race with 1-0 win over MB

nmbsoft-catcherThe North Myrtle Beach High softball team took a firm grip of the Region 7-3A championship, but first the Lady Chiefs had to survive a nail-biter against its biggest rival.

North Myrtle Beach squeezed out a 1-0 victory over visiting Myrtle Beach on Friday night to take a two-game lead in the region standings with just two games remaining. If the Lady Chiefs (19-2 overall, 7-1 region) win one more game or second-place Socastee loses one, NMB will officially wrap up the crown.

But it didn’t come easily in a week filled with close calls for NMB. After suffering their first region loss to Socastee 3-2 and defeating St. James 5-3 earlier this week, the Lady Chiefs got taken to the wall again by a young but talented Myrtle Beach squad.

North Myrtle Beach ace Taylor Hansis (14-2) outdueled eighth-grader Emmalee Ballard in a game inĀ  which pitching was at a premium. Both teams managed only four hits apiece, but it was Macy Johnson’s RBI in the fifth inning that broke the scoreless tie and proved to be the game-winner.

Myrtle Beach’s McKenzie Coble and Serrah Ballard, the seventh-grade sister of Emmalee, combined for all of the Lady Seahawks’ hits on the night with two apiece. Myrtle Beach made only one error on the night compared to two for the Lady Chiefs, but it proved costly in the critical fifth frame.
