NMB takes second, CF third at Best of the Beach event

Coming off a disappointing region loss to Myrtle Beach last week, the North Myrtle Beach volleyball team bounced back in a big way with a second-place finish in the Best of the Beach tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Chiefs won all four games in pool play at the 13-team tourney held at Carolina Forest, then won their way to finals before falling to Riverside 2-1 in the championship match.
North Myrtle Beach won the first game 25-20 before narrowly losing the second two, a 27-25 tiebreaker in Game 2 and a 15-13 nail-biter in the third and deciding game.

Sophomore Ellen Johnson led the Lady Chiefs with 16 kills in the title tilt and Tara Hix had 20 assists. Taylor Allman was named to the all-tournament team for North Myrtle Beach.

“Our girls played great all day,” said North Myrtle Beach coach Estelle Barentine. “I hope we’re peaking at the right time because we’ve got some tough games coming up before the region tournament.”

The Lady Chiefs defeated Conway, Pee Dee Academy, Myrtle Beach Christian Academy and Summerville in pool play, going a combined 8-0 in the morning session. They knocked off St. James 2-0 and Johnsonville 2-0 to remain unbeaten on the day before losing the last two games to Riverside.

Tournament host Carolina Forest also had a relatively easy turn to the semifinals before falling to Riverside 2-0 in a pair of close games, 25-23, 26-24.  Katie Davis had six kills, seven digs and three aces in the match and made the all-tournament team.

The Lady Panthers travel to North Myrtle Beach for a non-region showdown on Monday.
