No. 1 Sharks pin Bulldogs, keep eyes on bigger prize

There was little celebration by the No. 1-ranked St. James High wrestling squad following its easy victory over Camden in Wednesday’s first round of the Class AAA playoffs.

The Sharks have their eyes on a much bigger prize.

After stopping one step short of the Class AAA state championship match last year, losing in the Lower State Finals to Chapin, St. James has been focused on taking that next giant leap forward for its program.

That’s why Wednesday’s 77-6 win over the Bulldogs was treated with a business-like approach. Call it one part excitement, two parts focus on the future.

“We just want to stay healthy and wrestle strong and see what happens,” said St. James coach Matt Anderson. “We know if we win out and can beat Chapin (in the Lower State) we get to go to the state. That’s been our goal since Day One.”

The Sharks have one more hurdle to clear before getting their wish. They host Bluffton on Monday and, if all goes according to plan, will travel to Chapin on Wednesday for the right to represent the Lower State in the Class AAA Finals.

“We’ve got 10 seniors who are real excited about, not just paying (Chapin) back but to reach our goal of going to state,” Anderson said.
