No. 13 Chants swept away by Yellow Jackets, weather

gtbase-15After playing six innings to complete game two of the series earlier Sunday, #13 Coastal Carolina and #25 Georgia Tech only played seven innings in the afternoon due to lightning. The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the first and twice in the second and held on for a 4-2, seven-inning win to complete the series sweep.

The Yellow Jackets, who completed Saturday’s postponed game with a 9-8 comeback victory, improve to 30-14 while the Chanticleers drop to 31-14. The game was suspended at 3:58 pm with one out and in the bottom of the seventh. The game was ultimately called at 5:11 pm with no break in the inclement weather in the forecast.

Coastal shook off the disappointment from game two earlier in the day (Georgia Tech scored four runs in the ninth to win 9-8) to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of the series finale. Michael Paez drew a one-out walk and scored after back-to-back singles by G.K. Young and Zach Remillard.

The Yellow Jackets answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Connor Justus was hit by a pitch and he scored on an RBI double by Carter Hall. Hall took third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kel Johnson.

In the second, Trevor Craport was hit by a pitch and his pinch runner, Keenan Innis, stole second and later scored on a double by Arden Pabst. Justus followed with an RBI single back up the middle.

Remillard, who was 3-for-3 with both of CCU’s RBI, cut the CCU deficit in half, 4-2, with a solo home run to start the fifth. It was his second home run of the day and 11th of the season, tying Connor Owings and  Young for the team lead.

Austin Kitchen pitched 4.1 scoreless in relief, allowing one hit and striking out three. Tyler Poole (4-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits in two innings.

Coastal Carolina will continue its nine-game road swing with a three-game set at Liberty this coming weekend.
