No. 17 Coastal upset in its own backyard by Blazers

ccusoc-blondeThe No. 17/18 Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team was upended by UAB 2-1 Saturday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

Freddy Ruiz tallied the game-winner in the 34th minute to give the Blazers (4-2-1) the victory. Sophomore Sergio Camargo notched the lone score for Coastal, which fell to 3-3-0 on the year.

Camargo opened the match’s scoring in the eighth minute with his first marker of the season and 10th of his collegiate career. Camargo received a pass just inside the 18-yard box from Elis Bjornsson then unloaded a shot past the UAB’s Joe Kuzminsky and into the far side netting.

Eleven minutes later UAB leveled the match off the head of Pachinno Roberts. The Blazers earned back-to-back corner kicks with Stewart Abrahart’s second finding Roberts in the box.

The Blazers took their 2-1 lead in the 34th minute as Freddy Ruiz beat Coastal’s Devin Cook-Perales after an Alex Clay pass sprung Ruiz behind the Chanticleer backline.

Camargo led the Chanticleers in the shot column with seven attempts. The Colombian forced three saves by UAB’s keeper and clanked a one-time off the crossbar in the middle stages of the first half.

Following the intermission, the field tilted squarely in the Coastal’s favor; however, the UAB defense was up to the task and denied the Chanticleers an equalizer. Coastal outshot the Blazer 9-1 in the second half of play and 19-7 for the match. In addition, the Chants earned 11 corner kicks to UAB’s three, including a 10-0 margin in the second half.

UAB’s Kuzminsky recorded eight saves in the winning effort, including several from point-blank range.

Coastal starts it Big South regular season title defense on Tuesday, Sept. 23, with a trip to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on Gardner-Webb. Coastal has won six straight against the Runnin’ Bulldogs, including a 1-0 decision in Conway last season.
