Girls Hoops: Seahawks run past Wilson; NMB halts SJ

mbghoops-25dribFor most of the season, the No. 2-ranked Myrtle Beach High girls basketball team has shown it knows how to dominate. On Friday night, the Lady Seahawks also proved they can play with their backs against the wall.

After trailing for the better part of three quarters, the Lady Seahawks (15-2 overall, 5-0 region) used a late surge to overtake No. 8 Wilson by a 51-47 score at Myrtle Beach High, all but locking up the Region 7-4A title.

The Lady Tigers, who only two in-state losses have come at the hands of Myrtle Beach, led for most of the game and opened up a 28-21 advantage in the third. But the Lady Seahawks outscored Wilson 30-19 the rest of the way to get the win.

Kiana Adderton scored a team-high 18 points, including four clutch free throws down the stretch to complete the comeback. Kira Bell scored eight of her 14 points in the critical fourth period, and Jalah Horton hit four 3-pointers for 12 points.

The Lady Seahawks host St. James on Tuesday with a chance to clinch the region crown.

* North Myrtle Beach 41, St. James 26: The Lady Chiefs’ defense shut down the Lady Sharks to cruise to a region victory on the road.

North Myrtle Beach’s Aquera Johnson led all scorers and rebounders with 12 points and 13 boards. Shaquera Johnson added nine points and Julie Carini chipped in six. The Lady Chiefs held St. James to only nine first-half points to pull away.

The Lady Chiefs return home to face Marlboro County on Tuesday.

* Conway 46, Socastee 35: Meme Williams scored a game-high 19 points and Neci Hemingway turned in another double-double performance of 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the No. Lady Tigers (14-4, 7-0) to a region victory over the Lady Braves.

* West Florence 60, Carolina Forest 37: The Lady Panthers (13-6, 4-2) suffered a serious region setback on the road against the Lady Knights. Carolina Forest travels to Sumter on Tuesday.
