No. 20 Cougars win season series over No. 24 Chants

cofcbase-13hrThe #20 College of Charleston Cougars (29-9) converted three straight walks in the third inning into four runs and held on to defeat #24 Coastal Carolina (27-13), 8-5, Wednesday evening at Patriots Point.

The third of the three walks in the third inning forced in a run. The then Cougars hit a two-run single and an RBI single to take a 4-1 lead. Alex Pastorius added a two-run home run in the fourth, which proved to be the difference.

Coastal struck first with a run in the top of the third. Tyler Chadwick hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a Billy Cooke sacrifice bunt and scored on an RB I single to center field by Anthony Marks.

The Cougars responded with four runs in the home half of the third. With two outs, Ryan Brown hit a slow roller for an infield hit. Three straight walks forced home the tying run and Nick Pappas followed with a two-run single. Morgan Phillips then plated Blake Butler with an RBI single up the middle.

The College of Charleston added two runs in the fourth. After a walk to Brown, Pastorius hit a two-run home run to left field.

Charleston used another two-out rally to push across a run for a 7-1 lead in the fifth. Phillips singled and went to third on a hit-and-run single by Erven Roper. Champ Rowland followed with an RBI double down the left field line.

The Chanticleers loaded the bases in the seventh thanks to a walk to David Parrett, single by Tyler Chadwick and walk to Anthony Marks. Parrett later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-2.

However, the Cougars quickly got that run back as Pappas hit the first pitch in the bottom of the seventh over the center field wall for his sixth home run of the season.

Coastal trimmed its deficit to three, 8-5, in the eighth. After a G.K. Young single and walk to Jack Curtis, Casey Schroeder crushed a three-run home run to right field for his ninth round-tripper of the season.

Nathan Helvey (6-3) earned his second win over Coastal in eight days. He scattered five hits for one run over six innings as CCU hit into two key double plays. Brandon Glazer earned his first save by working a perfect ninth.

Tyler Poole (1-1) took the loss. Zach Remillard and Chadwick each went 2-for-3 for the Chants.

Coastal Carolina will return to league play with a three-game set at Presbyterian this weekend.
