No. 21 Chants open season with double-dip Virginia trip

ccusoc-10After advancing to the NCAA Tournament each of the last five years, Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer is again ranked among the nations’ top 25 to start the season. The 2015 Chanticleers will test their mettle early and often this season, starting with a top 25 fixture on opening day.

The Chants, under the direction of 18th-year head coach Shaun Docking, get the season under way on Friday (7 p.m.) at No. 24 Old Dominion. The Chanticleers then travel to VCU, which received votes in the preseason NSCAA coaches’ poll, for a 6 p.m. first kick on Sunday.

Coastal enters the 2015 campaign ranked 21st in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason top 25 poll, the official poll recognized by the NCAA. The Chants are also ranked 21st by College Soccer News and 22nd by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Coastal finished the 2014 campaign with the NSCAA’s No. 22 ranking.

This marks the fourth consecutive season the Chanticleers have started the season ranked among the NSCAA’s top 25. Coastal checked in at No. 17 to start the 2012 season, No. 13 in 2013 and No. 18 last year. In addition to opening the season at No. 24 Old Dominion, the Chants also face No. 17 Charlotte and No.11 Clemson. Coastal’s other nonconference opponents include VCU, William & Mary, UAB, NC State, Hofstra and South Carolina.

The Chants return seven starters and 11 letter winners, including five starters, from the 2014 team that won an NCAA Tournament game for the fourth straight season. Headlining the list of returnees this fall is midfielder Sergio Camargo (17pts/6g/5a in 2014) and co-Preseason Big South Defensive Player of the Year Tommy Gudmundsson. Other key returners include senior forward Bryce Follensbee and senior defensive midfielder Colin Marz along with sophomores Louis Dargent (MF) and Elis Bjornsson (D).
