No. 21 Chants stop Rams, complete weekend sweep

ccusoc-uzoThe 21st-ranked Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team used a pair of goals by junior newcomer Tobenna Uzo and a stout defensive performance to defeat VCU 2-0 Sunday evening at the Rams’ SportsBackers Stadium in Richmond, Va.

The victory moves the Chanticleers to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Rams fall to 0-2-0.

After nearly 30 minutes of controlling the pace of play and time of possession, Coastal’s Uzo found the match’s first score with a right-footed blast at the 29:19 mark of the opening half. Sergio Camargo ignited the scoring run near the Coastal 18-yard box as he played a ball ahead to Arnar Geirsson at the midfield stripe. Geirsson dribbled through a Ram defender and found Uzo heading to the right corner of the VCU 18. Uzo, a transfer from Houston Baptist, received the ball, dribbled pass his defender and slotted home his first goal as a Chanticleer.

The Chants remained in control throughout the remainder of the half. The teams went into the intermission with Coastal holding the 1-nil lead, while also owning the edge in shots (5-2) and corner kicks (4-2).

Uzo scored his second goal of both the season and the match in the 56th minute of action. Elis Bjornson collected a loose ball on the left side of the field 25-yards from goal and sent a lofting ball into the box toward the head of Uzo and Louis Dargent. Uzo positioned himself behind his defender and headed the ball past VCU’s Garrett Cyprus.

Coastal, which opened the season with a win at No. 22/24 Old Dominion on Friday, controlled much of the remainder of the match. The Chants both created scoring threats and turned away the same threats by the Rams.

The Chants closed the match with a 9-6 edge in shots and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Coastal’s Fernando Pina earned the win and shutout as he improved to 2-0-0 on the season with his four-save performance. VCU’s Cyprus took the loss, falling to 0-2-0 on the season.

Coastal Carolina opens its 2015 home schedule this coming Friday, hosting regional rival No. 14/17 Charlotte.  Admission to the 7 p.m. match is free.
