No. 5 Chants open league play with shutout of G-W

Bryce Follensbee scored twice 21 seconds apart in the third minute of the match and the fifth-ranked team in the nation never looked back as Coastal Carolina eased to a 4-nil win over Gardner-Webb in the Big South opener for both sides.

Follensbee’s multi-goal game was his second as a Chanticleer and first since scoring twice against Maryland last season. Moreover, he joins Tobenna Uzo, Jair Espinoza and Sergio Camargo as Chants to score a brace this season.

Coastal remained unbeaten on the season, running its record to 6-0-1, and won its 41st Big South Conference match in its 47th league outings since 2010. Garner-Webb fell to 1-7-0 on the season.

Follensbee opened the match’s scoring with his third goal of the season at the 2:09 mark of the first half. Einar Einarsson played an excellent through ball ahead to Follensbee who took a couple of touches before beating the keeper, who had come out of the net, to the right side netting. Twenty-one seconds later Follensbee struck again with a shot into the top netting with assists from Arnar Geirsson and Sergio Camargo, making the score 2-0 in Coastal favor after only 149 seconds of play.

Coastal went to the half with the 2-0 lead on the scoreboard, while also holding a commanding 12-3 edge in shots.

In the 49th minute Einarsson scored on a 21-yard free kick for his first of the season and Coastal’s third of the game. Louie Dargent was fouled just outside the box, setting up Einarsson’s scoring strike.

Darius Strambler scored the final goal of the game to provide the 4-0 score. Strambler received a pass from Ryan Willoughby inside the box, beat his immediate defender and fired a low-lying shot inside the right post.

Coastal’s Fernando Pina was untested in the win as he a Bryan Seefeld split the Chants’ fifth shutout of the season. Gardner-Webb’s William Liles made five saves in the losing effort. Coastal closed the match with a 22-5 lead in shots and earned seven corners to GWU’s one.

Coastal plays its second of three consecutive home matches Wed., Sept. 25, hosting NC State. The match, which is scheduled for 6 p.m., will be streamed live on the Big South Network and admission is FREE for both CCU students and the general public. Coastal defeated the Wolfpack 3-1 in Raleigh last season.
