No. 7 Seminoles on verge of sweeping No. 23 Chants

ccubase-paez2DJ Stewart and Chris Marconcini each hit two-run home runs to lead #7 Florida State to an 8-3 victory versus #23 Coastal Carolina Saturday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

The Seminoles improve to 35-13 while the Chanticleers drop to 31-15. The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.

The Seminoles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Josh Delph reached on an error, moved to second on a single from John Sansone and took third on an infield dribbler from DJ Stewart. With the bases loaded, Delph scored when Qunicy Nieporte hit into a double play.

Florida State pushed its advantage to 3-0 in the third. Danny De La Calle hit a leadoff double and scored on Stewart’s two-out, two-run home run to left center field.

Then in the fourth inning, De La Calle drove in a run to give FSU a 4-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, De La Calle hit a deep fly ball to right center field to bring home Dylan Busby. Delph followed with a hit-and-run, RBI single to plate Ben DeLuzio and put runners on the corners. The Seminoles pulled off a double steal with Taylor Walls scoring to put FSU on top 6-0.

Chris Marconcini put Florida State on top, 8-0, with a two-run home run in the fifth.

Coastal got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Casey Schroeder hit a two-out double and scored in an RBU single to center field by David Parrett.

The Chants added a run in the eighth. Anthony Marks reached on a fielder’s choice, was safe at second on an error and advanced to third on a balk. Connor Owings delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, driving in Marks.

Coastal tackled on a final run in the ninth inning to provide the 8-3 final. Jack Curtis drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a wild pitch. After a a walk to pinch hitter Kevin Woodall, Jr., Tyler Chadwick, who was 2-for-4, hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield.

Mike Compton (3-1) earned the win. He pitched seven innings and allowed one run and five hits with no walks and a career-high 11 strikeouts. Austin Kerr (8-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He allowed nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.
