4A Roundup: NMB, MB win to wrap up playoff berths

nmbfoot-4The No. 8-ranked North Myrtle Beach High football team played its most complete game of the season Friday night, spoiling St. James’ homecoming game with a 64-0 victory at the Shark Tank.

The Chiefs (8-1 overall, 2-1 Region 7-4A) scored early, often and in almost every way imaginable, converting three consecutive turnovers into touchdowns for 33-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Chiefs used long TD drives to open the game, capped by short runs by Nick Vereen and Kered Class, then things really got one-sided. NMB recovered a fumble to set up a Cason McClenden to Reece Finch 23-yard TD pass, then stopped a fake punt and recovered another fumble to set up back-to-back TD runs by T.J. Gore.

NMB’s Andrew Smith booted a 42-yard field goal to make it 36-0, and even the few mistakes the Chiefs did make seemed to bounce their way. The Chiefs fumbled the ball into the end zone and Finch pounced on it to give NMB a 43-0 halftime advantage. With a running clock in the second half, McClendon scored a rushing TD and Porter had two in a backup role. NMB outgained St. James 475 yards to 48.

The Chiefs, who clinched a playoff berth with the win, have a bye week before wrapping up the regular season at home against Wilson on Nov. 11.

* Myrtle Beach 41, Wilson 27: Playing for the first time in nearly a month, the No. 2-ranked Seahawks were concerned about coming out a bit rusty. Instead, Myrtle Beach played well until the final minutes to remain undefeated on the season.

The Seahawks (9-0, 2-0) built a 41-7 lead before letting off the gas a bit early and allowing Wilson to score the final three touchdowns of the game. But it was too late for the Tigers as the Seahawks dominated from the opening kick.

Myrtle Beach’s Jermani Green scored three touchdowns and Keyonte Sessions rushed for two more as the Seahawks led 27-0 at halftime. Lawson Cribb connected with Marquis Grissett on a 16-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to make it 41-7, but the Tigers rallied late against a running clock.

The Seahawks wrapped up a playoff berth with the win. They travel to St. James next week.
