North Myrtle Beach sweeps Sharks to retain region lead

The North Myrtle Beach claimed sole possession of first place in Region 7-3A with 48-43 victory over St. James on Friday night at the Shark Tank.

Jaquan Grissett exploded for a game-high 26 points, including a clutch 9-for-11 performance from the free throw line, to help the No. 7 Chiefs (15-5 overall, 5-1 region) break a tie atop the region standings with the Sharks (14-6, 4-2).

St. James was able to shut down North Myrtle Beach’s 3-point shooting threat from twins Josh and Matt Lindsey, who went just 2-for-8 from behind the arc. But they had no answer for Grissett, who iced the game late at the foul line.

Caleb Duggan led the Sharks with 11 points and Nehemiah Stafford and Tre MacCallum scored 10 points apiece. McCallum added 10 rebounds for a double-double as St. James outscored North Myrtle Beach 28-12 in the paint but hit just 1 of 12 3-pointers on the night.

* North Myrtle Beach 47, St. James 36: The Lady Chiefs dodged a bullet to remain undefeated in Region 7-3A play on Friday night, needing a second-half comeback to overcome a pesky St. James squad.

Despite the No. 6 Lady Chiefs being undefeated in the region and the Lady Sharks being winless against league foes, St. James almost turned the standings upside down at the Shark Tank.

St. James (8-11 overall, 0-6 region) built a surprising 25-16 halftime lead before North Myrtle Beach (18-2, 6-0) rallied to tie it up at 34-all entering the fourth quarter.

The Lady Chiefs’ defense clamped down and held St. James to only two points in the fourth period. Taylor Allman scored a team-high 15 points and India Farmer posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ja’Quella Livingston added 12 points and seven boards.

St. James got a game-high 17 points from Eldreonna Hannah.
